The moon light was broken and low this night by low gathering clouds floating by and he noted it might rain as he walked along the sidewalk among the throng of people moving around him. The bright lights of the city of Midgar gave more than enough illumination to the souls who were out running to and fro, most trying to complete errands or get home from a long day at work. There was more than enough light thrown by garish neon signs and overhead lamps for anyone to see him, and yet no one really seemed to even notice the man passing through. John Greywolf was almost a ghost to those walking by and past him. No one looked up to him or acknowledged his passing. He didn’t exist to them and that was the way the medicine man like it. The less attention he attracted the better he had been taught and that was the measure of how he walked his path. John wore his usual black hat with beaded band, jean jacket, and canvas cargo pants tucked inside his knee high moccasins. His attire stuck out among the business types who wore three piece suits and ties required by their employers which would have drawn a look of disdain from the professional type, if they saw him. Among the youth he might have been called ‘hokie’ or ‘lame’ for dressing like he did, that was if they saw him moving long.

He was a ghost and that was just the way the shaman wanted it to be. It made the task of following the young female in front of him easier. She walked along obvious to him, and all of Midgar it seemed, talking into a communicator conversing with what sounded like her mother. The conversation began when she answered the call and from there it just fell downward like a stone. John smiled noting mother dearest didn’t approve of the new boyfriend it sounded like and with a heavy sigh the young woman made a point to explain she was in love with the man and he was not going anywhere. The debate between mother and daughter brought a small smile to John’s face as he slipped past another woman busy looking through a rather large handbag, then the grin faded as he saw the two men approaching from across the street. They moved slow but purposeful.

And they there are… the shaman thought as he saw the pair. They were moving silently, hunters who had caught the scent of the one they were searching for, and now the men were going in as one for the kill. John looked back to the young woman in time to see her turn and start up the steps into an apartment building still talking on the communicator and still unaware of anything around her. The medicine man watched as the pair of men walked up the steps in pursuit of her and just as the last one started up John fell into step with him just behind heading up as well. The man reached the top step intent on going through the door the lady and his partner had only John wasn’t going to let that happen and with a hard left punch he struck the man right in the left kidney. The blow stopped the pursuer as he gasped reaching back but John wasn’t done as his right hand shot out with the edge hitting the side of the man’s neck with an inaudible pop. All at once the pursuers were down to one, and that one turned round to see his partner was now unconscious on the floor of the hall at the feet of a strangely dressed man in a large black hat.

“What the-“The man whispered reaching into his jacket for his weapon.

John jumped at him crossing the distance in a blink, but not fast enough to keep the man from drawing a gun. The shaman grabbed the man’s wrist preventing him from extending his arms to get a shot off, and as he did his sent his knee into the man’s with a loud wet pop. The last pursuer gave a yelp of pain from the joint dislocating suddenly just before John spun and twisted using his knowledge of Takenouchi-ryu to instantly flip the man onto his head in the cramped hall. The shaman heard both of the man’s wrists break as he used his taijitsu experience to setup a quick head stomp to knock the last pursuer out. In a matter of seconds the fight was over, both men incapacitated. John looked up and noticed the young woman was walking into her apartment, still talking away to mother dear and still oblivious to everything that had just happened. The medicine man smiled again as he turned and left the scene calmly and with easy steps.

As he went back to walking along the throng of people on the sidewalk John was a ghost once more and he felt serenity. This was his path, being alone, only as he moved along the shaman felt someone approach, someone who he knew…guess he wasn’t going to alone for long.

Shade was quietly sitting on her motorcycle with her arms crossed and resting over the tank while watching the scene unfold.  She had just driven around the corner when she first spotted the confrontation, and swiftly pulled over to lend a hand until she recognized it was John taking on the pair of thugs.  There was no point in assisting him.  Having fought with the shaman on several occasions in the past, Shade knew his experience and skill with, or without a weapon.  For the sake of amusement, she even glanced at her watch and timed him.

During that time, she tried to recall the last time she encountered John and wondered if he had ever found his long time foe.  Greywolf was a man of few words, especially about himself.  Much like Shade.  But it seemed the the past few years treated him well.  Perhaps he did find the peace he was searching for.

To no surprise, the failed criminals fell to just a few skilled hits as the oblivious woman went about chatting and unlocking her door to the safety of her apartment.  Shade could only give her head a slow shake with a chuckle while watching John noticing the same before heading on his way again and leaving the groaning thugs on the sidewalk.  She started her motorcycle and relished times like these that its engine was completely silent.  Most preferred the large and bulky looking tank cycles, but Shade preferred the lighter and sleek style for its easier maneuvering; such as now as she steered the cycle to slip between two parked vehicles and now take to the sidewalk right behind her old friend.

He felt her approach more than heard it, the bike being silent on its approach. John turned and saw his old friend Shade astride her ride grinning wickedly at him. Her comment about taking longer than needed with the two thugs only made the medicine man smile with one raised corner of his mouth. He knew Shade’s humor well, admired her teasing, and only took it to heart with lightness. She was still as wild and as beautiful as the last time he had seen her and probably just a little deadlier. John knew well also one never took Shade as an easy opponent, too many had before and felt the sting of her fist or the hard thwack of the broadside of her sword on their heads.

I wanted to give the men a fair chance to fight back, which was negated by the fact I chose to attack from behind.” John replied to her jest with a nod back to the apartment building.

John’s statement only made Shade smirk more as she guided the bike easily on the sidewalk. She was obviously more than use to his kind of humor. The pair moved along with the people well enough, most pedestrians either were use to seeing a cycle on the sidewalk or just didn’t care as Shade drew few looks from passer-by’s. John then turned and looked to his friend smiling from under his black hat.

Would you like to help me on something Shade, a little task that involves the girl I just kept from being taken?

When she stopped the bike John knew he had more than piqued the fighter’s curiosity and interest.

Shade kept the motorcycle at a slow coast beside John while using her feet to keep the bike balanced as they continued down the sidewalk.  Greywolf was one of the few she found she could be at ease with, with his laid back attitude and dry wit much like her own.  It had been quite a long time since their paths crossed, but the two now conversed as if no more than a week had passed between them.  And the passing of time appeared to have no effect on John.  He still carried his peaceful aura with a confident gait in his step, and if one knew how to notice, it appeared there was even more wisdom behind his eyes than before.

And she had to admit, she was also glad to see him.  After their last battle together, the shaman just up and disappeared without a word or a trace.  There could only be two causes.  Either he found what he was looking for and now moved on in his life, or his life took a drastic and unfortunate turn.  Shade never worried about the latter with Greywolf.  He was too damn cunning.

His question did indeed catch Shade off guard.  So much so, she stopped the cycle, not caring that what few pedestrians behind them snorted with annoyance when they had to walk around them. She couldn't help the twitch at the corner of her lips while trying to hide the surprise from her expression.  Her head turned slightly to glance back over her shoulder at the building the woman had walked into before looking at Greywolf again.  Shade studied him for a moment while trying to digest the possibility...

“I hope you're not expecting any dating advice from me, or hopeful pick up lines, because I'm the last person who could help you with that, my friend....”
